Have your Cake and Eat it

With the festive season just round the corner, we all are tempted to eat sumptuous desserts. Visiting family and friends, having get-togethers, partying out… all these are incomplete without cheesecakes, brownies, gourmet pies, cakes, etc. My mouth has already started watering… Like me, you might also not be able to resist eating those delicious and pleasing desserts only to end up feeling guilty later by accumulating more calories. You would be surprised to learn that most of the popular desserts that people usually consume during Christmas and New Year contain calories ranging from 1200 to 2000 calories. Ooplah! That’s too much to risk your health for.

Thank Goodness, there are healthy choices to make this season for the calorie conscious. So now, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Here’s a simple yet tasty recipe that contains less than 200 calories per serving. Try it without worrying about those extra flabs. It’s a perfect dessert to appease your sweet tooth. So, go ahead and relish it.

Apple Crisp Delight

4-5 apples – peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup oats
4 T Brown sugar
2.5 T Water
2 tsp Cinnamon
4 oz Fat-free vanilla yogurt
1/8 tsp Ground nutmeg
3/4 C Fat-free whipped topping

Method

1. Mix apples and oats in a 1-quart microwave-safe bowl.
2. Combine brown sugar, water and cinnamon and pour over the apple-oat mixture
3. Cover with wax paper and microwave on high for 5 to 7 minutes, rotating 1/4 turn halfway through cooking time.
4. Bake until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown

Note: Depending on thickness of fruit, cooking time may be longer.

Yields: 12 servings (149 calories per serving)
